Radar was rescued just before Christmas and was brought to the shelter by the dog warden. He was very shy when he first came in. He would slink about at the back of his kennel and avoid eye contact with anyone for a few weeks before eventually he started to gain confidence. Now we know that really, Radar is just a teddy bear, and he needed a moment to settle in.
Radar loves people and is very friendly, affectionate and goofy. He shares his kennel with a lively female pup and gets on well with her, but we think he would be quite happy in a home where he’s the only resident dog as he doesn’t rely on canine companionship.
Radar is around the size of a German Shepherd and has a beautiful coat that will need some upkeep to ensure he doesn’t get matts and knots. Thankfully he’s quite happy to be groomed and untangled, and just lies on the floor enjoying all the fuss. He has a sweet, soft nature and when he knows and trusts you, he very gently melts into your arms and demands endless cuddles. He is very affectionate, and will sit at your feet staring up at you waiting for a fuss if you’re in his kennel with him.
We don’t think that Radar has ever had a proper home before, but we think he has experienced some kindness from humans. He doesn’t take too long to warm to new people, and he’s learning to walk nicely on the lead too with the volunteers every weekend. It’s possible that Radar was a farm dog, or lived outside, but living inside a typical household might be very new to Radar and he will therefore need a gentle, patient approach while he adjusts to things in his own time. He would be best suited to a semi-rural home with direct access to a garden, and somewhere that is in close proximity of plenty of green spaces, nice walks, and away from busy roads and crowds.
Radar has not been around cats to our knowledge, but he could live with children aged 8+. He is generally a very gentle dog, but would probably find very young children to be quite overwhelming. There’s no doubt that once settled, Radar will make a gorgeous companion dog and we’ll be very envious of those who get to call him theirs!
